Have you ever seen an eagle in the wild? Once, on a family vacation in Canada, I had the unexpected blessing of seeing an eagle in the wild (it was sitting in a tree on the golf course I was playing…what a wonderful set of coincidences, huh?). Anyway, I was excited beyond words because I had never seen an eagle except behind a cage…

While it’s great to see one at all, behind a cage is not what was meant to be for an eagle….it was meant to fly majestically through the sky while the rest of creation watches in awe….Eagles were meant to soar!

Many of us are just like an eagle in a cage. We know deep-down that life should more than what we’ve experienced. We have a sense that we should be accomplishing far more, dreaming bigger dreams, enjoying things on a deeper level, but we feel caged in by circumstances. Worse yet, we start to think that is NORMAL!

But it’s not normal at all. It’s certainly not what God intended for us. His words in Jeremiah still ring true today for each one of us:

Jeremiah 29:11 - “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

For most of us, we’d like to think that’s true, but we’re still waiting….and the longer we wait…the less we believe it. We’ve become like a trained elephant that has been chained to a stake too long. There is incredible power at our disposal, but we’ve been trained through life experience that we DON’T have the power that we actually do through Christ.

And so, we settle. We accept average, and OK, and ordinary, and getting by, as our lot in life. We live in cages of our own making. We impose limitations that God never intended. Because we’ve “learned”. The problem is that we’ve “learned” wrong.

The life that God designed us to live is never too late for the taking. But it will require some changes, some shifts in thinking, some new habits, and the breaking of old ones.

Eagles in cages don’t have a choice, but we do. We don’t have to stay in prisons of our own making. We don’t have to continue to accept our often distorted view of “normal”. It’s time to rise above our current situations and let 2008 be the year that we soar. Let’s fly!

  1. What condition or circumstance is keeping you from flying…from experiencing something more?
  2. What are the things you have settled for, that you have said yes to that keep you from being able to pursue something more?
  3. If you knew you could not fail (or if you knew that failing while trying was acceptable), what would you attempt for God?
  4. Is there anything about flying, about moving beyond where you are to something more, that scares you?
  5. Are you willing to give it all to God?

Have you ever seen an eagle in the wild? Once, on a family vacation in Canada, I had the unexpected blessing of seeing an eagle in the wild (it was sitting in a tree on the golf course I was playing…what a wonderful set of coincidences, huh?). Anyway, I was excited beyond words because I had never seen an eagle except behind a cage…

While it’s great to see one at all, behind a cage is not what was meant to be for an eagle….it was meant to fly majestically through the sky while the rest of creation watches in awe….Eagles were meant to soar!

Many of us are just like an eagle in a cage. We know deep-down that life should more than what we’ve experienced. We have a sense that we should be accomplishing far more, dreaming bigger dreams, enjoying things on a deeper level, but we feel caged in by circumstances. Worse yet, we start to think that is NORMAL!

But it’s not normal at all. It’s certainly not what God intended for us. His words in Jeremiah still ring true today for each one of us:

Jeremiah 29:11 - “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

For most of us, we’d like to think that’s true, but we’re still waiting….and the longer we wait…the less we believe it. We’ve become like a trained elephant that has been chained to a stake too long. There is incredible power at our disposal, but we’ve been trained through life experience that we DON’T have the power that we actually do through Christ.

And so, we settle. We accept average, and OK, and ordinary, and getting by, as our lot in life. We live in cages of our own making. We impose limitations that God never intended. Because we’ve “learned”. The problem is that we’ve “learned” wrong.

The life that God designed us to live is never too late for the taking. But it will require some changes, some shifts in thinking, some new habits, and the breaking of old ones.

Eagles in cages don’t have a choice, but we do. We don’t have to stay in prisons of our own making. We don’t have to continue to accept our often distorted view of “normal”. It’s time to rise above our current situations and let 2008 be the year that we soar. Let’s fly!

  1. What condition or circumstance is keeping you from flying…from experiencing something more?
  2. What are the things you have settled for, that you have said yes to that keep you from being able to pursue something more?
  3. If you knew you could not fail (or if you knew that failing while trying was acceptable), what would you attempt for God?
  4. Is there anything about flying, about moving beyond where you are to something more, that scares you?
  5. Are you willing to give it all to God?
