Manhood - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (Part 2)
Real men don’t cry! Real men are in touch with their feelings! Real men are tough! Real men are tender! Holy cow…talk about an identity crisis. Men have been receiving conflicting messages about manhood for years now. As a result, most men don’t even know who they are anymore. And the more men become unsure of themselves, their identity and their role, the more they retreat into their own controlled environment. And the more men disappear and retreat, the more everyone suffers. Families are spinning wildly out of control; and, since they are the building block of society, our culture is in crisis. And at the center of it all is the lack of men being men. (And being a male isn’t the same thing as being a man) Think I’m off the mark? Take a look at a few of these stats:
The Ugly Truth
The numbers are not pretty…
- There are 72,000,000 children under 18. Tonight, 33% of them will go to bed in a home without a biological father.
- 40% of first marriages end in divorce affecting 1,000,000 children each year.
- 33% of all children are born out of wedlock.
“It isn’t that they can’t see the solution. It is that they can’t see the problem.” Chesterton
FACT - Never before in our nation’s history have so many boys grown up apart from a father.
- 63% of youth suicides are in fatherless homes
- 75% of adolescent patients in chemicals abuse centers come from fatherless homes.
- 70% of juveniles in state operated institutions have no father.
- 85% of youth in prisons grew up in a fatherless home.
- 71% of high school dropouts come from a fatherless home.

Leading the charge against real manhood and the leadership of men is the radical feminist movement which in essence creates a culture that says that men are unnecessary. That has been a battle-cry for years, but had been on the wane as women made appropriate advances in the workplace and in culture. Since it is one of the tenants of their religion, Maureen Dowd made an effort to resurrect it in her recent book “Are Men Necessary?” In it, she ponders the question of whether men are necessary at all since they really are little more than walking, talking sperm-donors. Eventually, science will replace men since they add little to society. I mean after all, if it weren’t for men there would be no wars, right?
It is into this circumstance that boys are born and struggle to find their way as they are declared to be worthless, unnecessary and, in some education environments, defective girls. Is it any wonder that men have been confused and on the retreat for decades now?
But men need to make a comeback. MANHOOD needs to make a comeback. Our culture depends on it. Our families depend on it. Our churches depend on it. And the time has come.
