We are in the process of unwrapping and discovering our spiritual gifts at The Grove. Ultimately, gifts are all about serving and building the body. A month or so ago, I ran across this statement on Perry Noble’s blog, (a pastor I am growing to respect more and more) and I think it fits nicely with what we are learning….
I said it today…I will say it again here…to all of the people who want to go “deep,” you are only as “deep” as the last person you served! If Jesus meant what He said in Matthew 20:28 then we are not supposed to seek how we can be served…but rather how we can serve others.

I do agree with this in terms of serving. Many people expect a hand out at church. Not interested in giving back. However, in conjunction with your post on burn-out, there is a time for being filled and going deeper in terms of discipleship. If we give and give and never fill our tank, we won’t have anything left with which to serve others. Following Christ’s example, He did come to serve. But He also spent much time with the Father…learning more about His will and His purpose. We should too! Both personally in our own devotional time and corporately as a Body, there IS a time to go deep! I think we will never be truly effective servants unless we continue to learn more and more about the character of God, His Kingdom, and His Word.
