Worst Performances on Tuesday night

· JC – A very sad effort once again. I didn’t realize that Diamond’s music was as masculine as it apparently was. But JC made Diamond sound like the all-time manly man.

· David Archuleta – Along the same lines as JC, he just didn’t have the testosterone to match Diamond’s musical style. This week really revealed the still huge difference between him and David C.

Other Stuff

· JC & David A cannot do anything close to justice to a Diamond song. And the group song reveals it even more. Actually only David C is in the right ballpark for Neil Diamond’s songs.

· Neil Diamond – This is a song I’ve never heard, but he still can deliver a song at his age better than most of the wanna-be’s that show up for AI. And without a doubt, the guy wrote some pretty amazing songs.

WHO’S IN TROUBLE?

· JC – Should be bottom three w/o a question. I have said for weeks that he lacks a certain maleness to his songs…and while doing Neil Diamond he really showed what he’s lacking….but somehow he’s safe? That is really sad.

· David A – Also thought he came up short last night in comparison to Diamond. If JC is safe, then DA must be in the bottom three since there is NO WAY that David C isn’t safe. Are you kidding me???? My two worst performances from Tuesday night are safe. That is a joke! I’m not here to say that Brooke or Syesha were outstanding, but come on… JC didn’t even meausre a blip on the Diamond Richter Scale. And to think that David C is in the bottom three?!?! Shades of Chris Daughtry again.

· David C – This guy was hands down the best at the Diamond songs. OK at least he’s safe which means they’re only doing the bottom two.

· Brooke & Syesha – Syesha has been on the bottom looking up so long she must feel like a piece of gum on the bottom side of the bar stool. Brooke has a winning way but has been a bit up and down over the last few weeks. Both are vulnerable, but Mercado has a higher hurdle because of her continuing position. Either could go, but Mercado is the more likely victim.

AND THE LOSER IN THIS ROUND IS…..

Brooke….My favorite is done. There is something so appealing about her to me…her genuineness…her openness….her sense of what you see is who she is…Those are rare qualities in most people today…much less someone in the entertainment industry. She was as real as it gets. But she lost steam through the competition. I still believe she has great potential, and am deeply saddened but not surprised to see her done. I don’t believe we’ve heard her for the last time. I still believe in you Brooke!

I came across this thought provoking post over on a blog that goes by the name of nakedpastor.com The idea behind the name is that the pastor is not hiding anything. It’s kind of out there, but he writes some good stuff. Anyway, he wrote a post not too long ago on the whole Britney Spears saga and made some correlations to the church. I’ve posted it here for your consideration:

What’s happening to Britney Spears has me thinking about how we treat the stars in our own communities. I think Britney is more of a victim of our culture than the cause of her own demise. I’ve seen this over and over again in my own life and in the lives of others in churches. This is roughly what happens:

    1. She shows that she’s gifted.
    2. She is invited to take responsibility as an opportunity to exercise or share this gift.
    3. She, usually being young in years or in the faith, gladly takes it on because she can use her gift and there’s some gratification in her gift being recognized.
    4. She is rewarded with praise, admiration, adoration, recognition, fame and sometimes money.
    5. With rewards and responsibility comes more responsibility, so this person is given more to do or the level of responsibility is increased. They become, necessarily, committed with verbal, written or unspoken expectations or contracts.
    6. Because this person was too young or immature to recognize her own boundaries or endurance and because she was unable or unwilling to say “No!”, they start to show signs of wear and tear.
    7. In the industry, this is met with more praise and the ethic of hard work paying off is preached, as well as the old idea that this is the cost of responsibility. Our curiosity into her humanness and vulnerability elevates her even further in our own eyes. In the church, this wear and tear is met with more prayer, encouragement, and servant-theology, service and sacrifice is preached even harder.
    8. Over time she begins to crack. This is evidenced by increased absences, embarrassing mistakes, illness, sloppiness, outspokenness and surprising behavior.
    9. This is met with either pity or outright condemnation. Correction is attempted. But we still expect her to produce and perform better than she ever has before.
    10. Finally, she crashes and burns. She totally loses it.
    11. The general reaction is scorn and blame. She is perceived and treated as though she is the scum of the earth because it is her own fault. She asked for it!

I see this with Britney. I see this is the church. All the time. These people are seen as failures, burn-outs, has-beens, dead wood… whatever. And it makes me sick because we are the ones who created them. I can’t see us stopping it either because we love to be entertained and the show must go on.

END OF POST

I think we’ve done some of this at The Grove. As a young church, we wanted everyone to get involved and give them a place. Unfortunately, I think we had some people in positions that weren’t best suited for, but because they are hard workers, they did the job well. You can then see the cycle as it is described in #3 forward. I think we’re finally at a place where we have recognized this and are dealing with it through the identification of spiritual gifts. When we do it right…God’s way…it works. Sadly, many of us, me included, can be slow learners.
