We had an interesting development over the weekend. Both of our teenage boys went to see the same movie… with different sets of friends.  Being VERY independent of each other, it’s rare that they ever choose the same thing.  What made this so ironic is that they were hanging with entirely different sets of friends and all wound up choosing to go to the same movie.  So, half our household contributed to the insane opening weekend box office for this movie.  According to reports I read today, the movie took in over $100 million.  That’s crazy.  Before it’s all said and done, we will probably contribute about $15 to the overall take the movie ends up with since Brandon claimed it will probably be his movie for 2008.  Each year, we all select our favorite movie for the year and buy it on DVD for Christmas.  It appears Brandon has an early favorite.  Zach claims that it was very good, but still no match for Transformers… his pick from Christmas of ‘07.

So for those of you looking for a recommendation, that’s about as good as it gets in the Doebler household…. Ironman is in the running for movie of the year 2008.

Sadly, this week’s round will be minus my favorite…Brooke.  I can’t say that I thought she should win…I just really liked her.  And I also thought (and still think) that Brooke can have a real future in the music industry.  She offers something so few performers really do…genuineness and sincerity.  I said weeks ago that I think she could potentially be a bit like Alicia Keyes in building a career… a slow build from a pianist singing really good music to a more fully formed entertainer.  I’m hoping it will happen and think it can if someone will get behind her.

Now onto this week’s contenders.  The Final Four give their take on the Rock ‘n Roll Hall Fame music.  I’m not exactly sure what that means other than we should have a second consecutive week of fun music.  As much as I enjoy AI, this year’s musical selections have been underwhelming, bordering on boring.  If there’s one thing that AI has proven over several years, it is that the contenders will default to ballads more than not.  Unless they are given wide berth with lots of high energy music to pick from, they will more times than not choose the same-o same-o…. which after a while becomes lame-o lame-o.  But the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame should spare us from more of that.  So where do our contenders stand going into this round?  Let’s take a look.

  1. David Cook - No change in any of this week’s rankings actually.  They are all still in the same spots.  Cook is the odds-on favorite to win.  I just don’t see anyone beating him at this point…but then again, we were all stunned when Duaghtry hit the mat a couple of years ago.
  2. David Archuleta - I like this kid, but he has become boring.  He’s got some growing up to do… life experience should improve his music.
  3. Jason Casro - If he has survived the last two weeks after absolutely horrible performances, he’s sticking until the final three.
  4. Syesha Mercado - Mercado is singing better than everyone but Cook right now…but the other two guys have shown more staying power.  It’s the end of the road for Syesha.

I could wind up being surprised if Mercado outlasts JC, but I don’t see either of them with a spot in the final two.  It’s a dog fight between Cook and Archuleta to see if speed dialers will beat out talent dialers.

The blogging world has been a great adventure for me allowing me to “meet” many wonderful people and to read their thoughts. One such person is “Maggie” over at Magnanimity. Maggie runs a terrific blog and offers many helpful thoughts and tips about blogging. Several weeks ago, Maggie bestowed on me a “thoughtful”  honor…a thinking blogger award for my article on Oprah Winfrey and her involvement in New Age thinking. Rules of Vulgarity - This is over on Dave Milam’s blog. Dave is a church planter in Charlotte, NC. They had their church equipment stolen and went to great lengths to establish contact with the thief. They even posted billboards across the Charlotte area. Many thought the billboards crossed the line and contained vulgar language unbecoming to a church. This post addresses the idea of vulgarity. Really interesting stuff.

Why Heaven Isn’t Where We End Up - I found this deeply challenging post on Backyardmissionary.com. The blog is written by a church leader in Australia. This post is an excerpt from a book that he has read. I taught a series of messages at The Grove a couple years ago about this subject, but this post contains some additional thoughts that I have not wrestled with before. Biggest Mistakes as a Leader #1 & Part #2 - These two posts are over on Perry Noble’s blog. Perry leads a church in SC that has grown to over 8000, but he comes across as totally real. I have come to deeply appreciate his wisdom and insights on life and church. It is truly helpful to read posts like this from leaders of churches that are making a difference.

I’m Not Connected - I “met” Bill Reichart through the blog post that got this whole “Thinking Blogger” award started for me. We’ve had the opportunity to speak on the phone and I really appreciate Bill’s heart, his ministry, and his talent for blogging/writing. As a “Connections” pastor at his church in Atlanta, he has a front-row seat on the problem of people feeling disconnected with church. I’ve referenced this post before and think it is worth noting again.

Expectations - This is one of the most powerful things I have ever read. It is on Darryl Strickland’s blog, but it is attributed to Mark Beeson, the head pastor of Granger Community Church in Granger, IN. Granger is a church that is seeing amazing results for the kingdom. And Mark Beeson has proven to be a leader worth listening too. Do not miss reading this.
