GPS Lessons
A few months ago, I shared a post with you with some lessons learned from my first trip with a GPS system. It was an interesting trip to say the least. Today, I got to pick up a few more lessons from traveling with a GPS that I thought I would pass along to you.
Earlier this morning, I went over to Bloomington to meet with my church planting coach, Mark Savage. We were meeting in a place I had been before, but I turned on the GPS just to see how I was doing on time and distance. As i got closer to my destination, the GPS sent me on a different route than the one I was familiar with. Initially, I complied, but I started to resist because it didn’t feel familiar. Even as the GPS was telling me the way to go, I wanted to turn around and go a different route, one that I knew, one that I had traveled before. As I struggled with whether to follow these directions or not, I finally did, and realized that I had arrived in a shorter and quicker time than normal.
WARNING… SPIRITUAL APPLICATION COMING…
Far too many times, I resisted the leading of the Lord. Far too often I have tried to pull back and follow patterns and paths that I have followed before and are familiar. The problem with that is that when I do that I am working in my own strength, relying on my own wisdom, trusting my own knowledge instead of allowing God to lead me into new places. I can think of many circumstances when God tried to teach me something new and get me there quickly but I preferred to do it my way. I chose to go back to old paths that had worked before. This pattern almost always ends up in frustration and taking the long way there.
The Lord tells us that there is a purpose for new wineskins. He doesn’t always work the same way. Sure, he’s the same God, but that doesn’t mean he chooses to lead the same way every time. If he did, it wouldn’t require any faith would it? And that’s the whole point of our journey…. learning to trust and follow the Lord.
My GPS reminded me this morning that God’s way will get me where I need to go quicker and faster than I ever will following my own devices. I just need to stay surrendered to hes leading.
So how about you… do you have some old paths that you keep going back to instead of following a new direction that the Lord has laid out for you?
