You’ve Got Mail - Philippians 3

<br />This is a chapter that lays down some timeless principles of “FIRST THINGS FIRST“, and that’s what I will focus on today.

VS 5-9 - Paul’s absolute focus gave him an absolute willingness to let go of nice things that didn’t matter. Check out what he laid down in verses 5 & 6:

  1. His heritage
  2. His pure lineage
  3. His former legalism
  4. His past zeal
  5. His self-righteousness

Paul so narrowed his focus that he tossed out not only the things he once counted as gain, but he considered everything as garbage for the sake of obtaining Christ!  He would lose it all if that allowed him to know Christ in a deeper way.

Leaders that change the world have this kind of sharp focus.  Some of the leaders in scripture that did so…

  • Abraham
  • Joseph
  • Moses
  • Stephen
  • Paul

A question that i have to ask myself is “What does it take to gain the focus required to become a truly effective leader?”  The keys seem to be priorities and concentration.  According to John Maxwell, “A leader who knows his priorities but lacks concentration knows what to do, but never gets it done.  A leader with concentration but no priorities has excellence without progress.”  Honestly, I struggle more with the first.  I long for the concentration of Paul that will allow me to be more effective.  Again, according to Maxwell, “When leaders harness both, they gain the potential to achieve great things.”

Here are the main ways most of us make decisions:

  1. The Ultimate - putting first things first
  2. The Urgent (my leading category) - putting loud things first
  3. The Unpleasant - putting hard things first
  4. The Unfinished - putting last things first
  5. The Unfulfilling - putting dull things first

Paul is clearly a leader who focused on the ultimate every day.  How about you?  Do you struggle with any of these like I do?  Do you have things out of order?  Do you struggle with concentration or do you struggle with priorities?  Here’s a suggested remedy for both of us…

  1. Work on yourself - You are your greatest asset or worst liability
  2. Work on your priorities - Fight for the important ones
  3. Work in your strengths - You can reach your potential if you do
  4. Work with your colleagues - You can’t be effective alone.

VS 7-14 - Let me offer one last piece from this chapter regarding priorities.  Paul gives us some great guidelines for setting them in order.

  1. He evaluated what held him back - He let go of all the things he once cherished, considering them all distractions to what God desired.
  2. He discovered what he wanted - Paul wanted God righteousness, not his own.  Christ became his solitary pursuit.
  3. He determined how to get it - With single-minded passion, Paul forgot the past and pursued the prize of his call.

So what is your one thing?  Can you list your priorities on one hand?  What are you pursuing?

<br />This is a chapter that lays down some timeless principles of “FIRST THINGS FIRST“, and that’s what I will focus on today.

VS 5-9 - Paul’s absolute focus gave him an absolute willingness to let go of nice things that didn’t matter. Check out what he laid down in verses 5 & 6:

  1. His heritage
  2. His pure lineage
  3. His former legalism
  4. His past zeal
  5. His self-righteousness

Paul so narrowed his focus that he tossed out not only the things he once counted as gain, but he considered everything as garbage for the sake of obtaining Christ!  He would lose it all if that allowed him to know Christ in a deeper way.

Leaders that change the world have this kind of sharp focus.  Some of the leaders in scripture that did so…

  • Abraham
  • Joseph
  • Moses
  • Stephen
  • Paul

A question that i have to ask myself is “What does it take to gain the focus required to become a truly effective leader?”  The keys seem to be priorities and concentration.  According to John Maxwell, “A leader who knows his priorities but lacks concentration knows what to do, but never gets it done.  A leader with concentration but no priorities has excellence without progress.”  Honestly, I struggle more with the first.  I long for the concentration of Paul that will allow me to be more effective.  Again, according to Maxwell, “When leaders harness both, they gain the potential to achieve great things.”

Here are the main ways most of us make decisions:

  1. The Ultimate - putting first things first
  2. The Urgent (my leading category) - putting loud things first
  3. The Unpleasant - putting hard things first
  4. The Unfinished - putting last things first
  5. The Unfulfilling - putting dull things first

Paul is clearly a leader who focused on the ultimate every day.  How about you?  Do you struggle with any of these like I do?  Do you have things out of order?  Do you struggle with concentration or do you struggle with priorities?  Here’s a suggested remedy for both of us…

  1. Work on yourself - You are your greatest asset or worst liability
  2. Work on your priorities - Fight for the important ones
  3. Work in your strengths - You can reach your potential if you do
  4. Work with your colleagues - You can’t be effective alone.

VS 7-14 - Let me offer one last piece from this chapter regarding priorities.  Paul gives us some great guidelines for setting them in order.

  1. He evaluated what held him back - He let go of all the things he once cherished, considering them all distractions to what God desired.
  2. He discovered what he wanted - Paul wanted God righteousness, not his own.  Christ became his solitary pursuit.
  3. He determined how to get it - With single-minded passion, Paul forgot the past and pursued the prize of his call.
