  • The Dunlap H.S. drum corp was there to provide percussion as people arrived.  I have to admit that I’m a bit of a nut for this stuff….but it seems most people were absolutely thrilled with their musical offering.  It was a great start.
  • As a church that celebrates the second chances we’ve all received from Jesus Christ, we opened with a Tim McGraw song called “Let it Go”, which really is about leaving the past behind.  I was surprised by how many people were singing right along with that one.  Hmmmm…. food for thought.
  • There was a wonderful spirit in the service.  There was joy, and laughter, and excitement.  When people arrive with a sense of expectation, things change.  And there was a tangible enthusiasm yesterday morning.
  • There were large numbers of people who made commitments in their personal walk with Jesus Christ at the close of the service.
  • We followed the service with a great lunch outside and enjoyed gawking at the classic cars brought over from Central Illinois Cruisers on an absolutely beautiful early fall afternoon.
  • Our people served spectacularly throughout the course of the day - from manning the parking lot as people arrived to assisting guests with anything they had need of, to serving the meal.  Our people absolutely ROCKED yesterday.
  • The building looked fantastic.  In the end, it’s not about the building.  But the impression our facility makes on people as they arrive can impact their openness to hear from God during the service.  We had a group of people who were work warriors in the last few weeks to turn our building into an incredible environment yesterday.

All in all, yesterday’s grand opening was a bit like a wedding.  There is an incredible amount of preparation that goes into it….then you have this wonderful event….followed by a time of group celebration….followed by near exhaustion.  But it was more than worth it.  Our folks will enjoy a much needed and well deserved break over the next week… but then we’ll gear up for our next event.  The reason for it all is to provide one more opportunity… one more connecting point… one more chance to reach people with the message of second chances from Jesus Christ.

An awesome weekend which culminated in Second Chance Church celebrating its Grand Opening is now in the books.  I am truly humbled at the amount of work and preparation that went into the weekend, but even more humbled by the responses from those who were present.  Here are some of the highlights for me:

  • The Dunlap H.S. drum corp was there to provide percussion as people arrived.  I have to admit that I’m a bit of a nut for this stuff….but it seems most people were absolutely thrilled with their musical offering.  It was a great start.
  • As a church that celebrates the second chances we’ve all received from Jesus Christ, we opened with a Tim McGraw song called “Let it Go”, which really is about leaving the past behind.  I was surprised by how many people were singing right along with that one.  Hmmmm…. food for thought.
  • There was a wonderful spirit in the service.  There was joy, and laughter, and excitement.  When people arrive with a sense of expectation, things change.  And there was a tangible enthusiasm yesterday morning.
  • There were large numbers of people who made commitments in their personal walk with Jesus Christ at the close of the service.
  • We followed the service with a great lunch outside and enjoyed gawking at the classic cars brought over from Central Illinois Cruisers on an absolutely beautiful early fall afternoon.
  • Our people served spectacularly throughout the course of the day - from manning the parking lot as people arrived to assisting guests with anything they had need of, to serving the meal.  Our people absolutely ROCKED yesterday.
  • The building looked fantastic.  In the end, it’s not about the building.  But the impression our facility makes on people as they arrive can impact their openness to hear from God during the service.  We had a group of people who were work warriors in the last few weeks to turn our building into an incredible environment yesterday.

All in all, yesterday’s grand opening was a bit like a wedding.  There is an incredible amount of preparation that goes into it….then you have this wonderful event….followed by a time of group celebration….followed by near exhaustion.  But it was more than worth it.  Our folks will enjoy a much needed and well deserved break over the next week… but then we’ll gear up for our next event.  The reason for it all is to provide one more opportunity… one more connecting point… one more chance to reach people with the message of second chances from Jesus Christ.

Of all the things that it’s hard to get church people out to do, none may be more challenging than having people come to pray.  Prayer is intimidating for so many of us.  What do I say?  What do I pray for?  will anyone hear me?  By the time most of us answer those questions, we pretty much decide that participating in a PUBLIC prayer service is completely out of the question.  We struggle on our own at times praying for 5-10 minutes….much less for an hour.

But last night was a breath of fresh air.  We had our first “church” prayer service.  We had no other agenda but to pray.  What a wonderful blessing to see nearly 1/3 or our adults come out to join in that effort.  This was not a “typical” prayer service.  We walked all over the building.  We prayed alone and we prayed together.  And it was one of the quickest hours I can remember.  There was such a wonderful spirit among us…

We have prayed… we have fasted… we have done what we can do.  I believe God is now getting ready to surprise us all!

Of all the things that it’s hard to get church people out to do, none may be more challenging than having people come to pray.  Prayer is intimidating for so many of us.  What do I say?  What do I pray for?  will anyone hear me?  By the time most of us answer those questions, we pretty much decide that participating in a PUBLIC prayer service is completely out of the question.  We struggle on our own at times praying for 5-10 minutes….much less for an hour.

But last night was a breath of fresh air.  We had our first “church” prayer service.  We had no other agenda but to pray.  What a wonderful blessing to see nearly 1/3 or our adults come out to join in that effort.  This was not a “typical” prayer service.  We walked all over the building.  We prayed alone and we prayed together.  And it was one of the quickest hours I can remember.  There was such a wonderful spirit among us…

We have prayed… we have fasted… we have done what we can do.  I believe God is now getting ready to surprise us all!

We are counting down days now…. not much time left.  I am trusting and believing that God wants to do wonderful things.  Here’s a sample…

On Sunday morning we had a young lady as a guest.  She has recently moved here and finished college.  She suggested that we consider beginning a young adult ministry.  Obviously we don’t have many young single, freshly-out-of-college adults in our church.  But we are on the verge of inviting many new people into our church.  So I told her that I would pray specifically for more people in her age group to come…which I did right there on the spot with her.  After I prayed, with tears in her eyes, she said, “I think I’m supposed to tell you that if you pray for them they will come.  But I don’t think that necessarily means people my age.  I’m not a prophet or anything like that… I just think God wants me to tell you that he wants to do more than you are expecting.”

That truly, deeply excites me.  When people who are brand new to our church sense what God wants to do that lights my fire.  And I need that this week.  This week has already proven to be a bear trying to settle my mind and wrestle with all of the final details and things that need to get accomplished and be completed.  But I will push through this because I know God is ready to bless…you can feel it.

Sitting here in the early morning reflecting back on the weekend’s events…to say it was an interesting weekend would be an understatement.

  • Saturday morning arrived with a great deal of work to be done.  You never know how many will show up to take care of what needs to be done, but our team turned out in great numbers.
  • We hung 800 door hangers in the neighborhoods surrounding Second Chance Church.  (That’s a lot of doors).
  • We got a number of large items moved/removed from the restaurant side of our building.  It is now clean enough to be used if necessary, and is presentable for people to see.
  • Sunday morning arrived without the presence of our new assistant, Coach Bob.  After 20 years of living in the same neighborhood in WI, their family returned to participate in a 50th birthday party for Michelle.  I am so pleased that they were able to go and celebrate with all their family and friends from home……however, I missed having Coach Bob here to handle the service with me.  I have come to depend on him quickly.
  • I sensed in a real way during the early part of the service yesterday that we were encountering spiritual warfare right then and there.  It’s fascinating to me that such a thing could happen.  But the front doors are no barrier for Satan… he feels free to walk right in.  And I’m sure he’s a frequent guest in many churches.  What better place to stir it up and to distract than right there in the church.  But we prayed that God would  be bigger and that HIS presence would press out our spiritual enemy.
  • We celebrated communion together on our last Sunday before the Grand Re-Opening.  It seems to me that Jesus took a similar route when he instituted this practice with his disciples.  It was almost like he gathered his team in the locker room before the big event to remind them why they were doing what they were doing…that his work would soon be done… and that they held the outcome of the mission in their hands.
  • Sunday afternoon, we gathered in the Kenser’s backyard to watch and celebrate 16 people getting baptized.  WOW!  What an amazing and moving experience to see that many people declare to the world that Jesus Christ is their Savior and they have given their lives to him.

So now we enter the home stretch - the final week of preparation.  But the first day of the week has set us off on a great track for getting it done.
