I spent some time earlier today talking to a lady that had visited Second Chance Church a few weeks ago.  Her story both saddened me and challenged me.  Her husband is in the Army and was serving in Iraq when his Humvee was hit by an explosive device.  He was lucky to survive but incurred some head trauma.  He is at Ft Bragg in NC while “transitioning” through the recovery period from his wounds.

The day that this lady visited SCC, that was the picture in her life.  Certainly challenging to say the least, but working through the difficulties.  But within the last two weeks, she has received notice that he is seeking a separation.  WOW!  Didn’t see that one coming.  She was just trying to do the best she could to manage two kids in a place that’s not home while her husband recovers from war wounds 800 miles away.  But throw in a potential end to the marriage and the whole picture changes.  Just that quick!

It struck me how often people around us tell us that everything is fine or at least manageable.  And we just sort of accept that and go about our own thing… or maybe that’s just me.  But who knows when a life-changing curve ball gets thrown in someone else’s life?  It can come at any minute of any hour of any day.  And often they will never see it coming.

I’m challenged that we have to consistently be connecting with people…encouraging them… questioning to see if things are OK.  Without that, we will miss incredible opportunities to share Jesus… and even more importanty - to BE Jesus to someone who needs it.   That’s our constant challenge isn’t it?

I’m sitting at home this evening with my mother and father-in-law contemplating America with Obama as President (all indicators point to him winning) and my wife is not even here.  She’s been missing since about 4:30 (it’s now 9:00) and I couldn’t be happier.

Many people have written that the hardest job in the world is being a minister.  And there is no question that it is far more difficult than anyone can imagine who isn’t one.  I remember a story Bill Hybels told about an Army General who told Hybels that he was lucky his job didn’t involve decisions about people living and dying in battle.  Hybel’s response was that he wished he were so lucky.  Because people’s eternal destinies are on the line with our work… not just physical life and death, but eternal life and death.  The weight of that responsibility along with trying to minister to people whose needs are always shifting is extremely difficult.  HOWEVER… as hard as that is, I think being a minister’s wife is even harder.  They are often assessed as the equal of the minister even though they are not the minister.  Whatever they say is often taken as if the final word has been spoken when it is nothing more than an expressed opinion.  It is a role I’m not sure that I could stand up under.  Many ministerial marriages fall apart under the strain.

But tonight, the women in our church have taken Lesley and Michelle (Coach Bob’s wife) out to treat them to pedicures, manicures, and dinner out at a wonderful restaurant.  I’m sure they don’t even know how important this is for these two.  I am deeply grateful that this evening has passed without my wife… and I’m sure that the heart deposit being made into both Lesley and Michelle will have deep and lasting value.

Sometimes the best thing a church can do for their pastor during Pastor Appreciation Month is simply to love their pastor’s wife!  Thank you to the ladies of Second Chance Church for doing just that tonight.

It feels as if I’ve fallen off the face of the earth over the last two weeks since I’ve added nothing to the blog here over that period of time.  It’s not as if I’ve given up on the blog, it’s just the events of the last two weeks have deterred me from it.

Two weeks ago, Lesley and I left after the Sunday service to head up to Jugville, MI to attend a pastor’s retreat.  The retreat was held at The Shack.  You gotta figure that if you’re going to “the shack” in “jugville”, it can’t exactly be a “5 star” location.  But what an incredible surprise.The Shack proved to be immaculate and spacious and located in a beautiful portion of MI during one of the most spectacular times of the year. Ministry is a wonderful blessing from God, but it can be mentally exhausting.  There are several ministries in place now around the country to provide free retreats for pastors and wives due to the high rate of burn-out among those in ministry.  We needed and thoroughly enjoyed our time away there.  We enjoyed our time with God and with each other…. which is the point of the retreats.

Then last week it was a game of catch-up.  You’ve all been there.  It’s great to get away, but there are always things waiting on you when you return that didn’t go away just because you did.  Then this weekend we had the high honor of welcoming Col Jeff O’Leary into our home while he ministered to our church over the weekend.

I was struck by the deep humility of Col O’Leary.  His bio reads like a fiction novel due to the incredible accomplishments he has had.  And yet in spite of it all, he maintains a truly humble spirit.  To hear him express his deep dependence on the Lord through prayer was personally convicting.  I know there have been stretches in my life when I have have functioned primarily in my own strength rather than God’s.  If a man like Col O’Leary can lean so heavily on God, then I can too.

Well, that’s my last two weeks in a nut-shell.  I’m back in the saddle now and the blog will resume it’s normal activity.

We are in wild and scary economic times these days to say the least.  When 1/3 of the stock market’s value can be wiped out in in less than a year, things start getting pretty hairy.  There are a host of underlying reasons for how we got here, but in the middle of the crisis, addressing those reasons doesn’t help us right now.  We need some advice.  We need some guidance.  We need some assurance.  We need a plan…… And we need these things NOW!

We are in wild and scary economic times these days to say the least.  When 1/3 of the stock market’s value can be wiped out in in less than a year, things start getting pretty hairy.  There are a host of underlying reasons for how we got here, but in the middle of the crisis, [...]

Last Saturday was a day that I thought might never arrive.  It was a day that I had thought about, desired, tried to arrange while in the Army, and hoped for for a long time, but wasn’t sure it would ever happen.  It was the day I went skydiving.  I know there are lots of people who think that one day they’d like to go skydiving, but somehow, that day never comes.  I didn’t want to be one of those people.  I tried very hard to get a slot in jump school while I was in the Army, but could never get the slot.  Since my Army days, the opportunity just hasn’t presented itself….until now.  Here’s a recap:

• Arrived at the church @ 6:50 to connect with everyone else going.  We had a total of nine people making the trip.
• Enjoyed the conversations questioning our sanity on the way up to Skydive Chicago
• Pulled into the facility in Ottawa and was surprised at the size of the operation
• Agreed to sign my life away before jumping 
• Finally got the “get ready” signal and started suiting up into our jump suits
• Hooked up with my instructor who explained all that I would need to do and all that would happen during the jump.
• Boarded the jump plane for the ride to our jump elevation.  This was actually the most difficult time of the whole process…. it was very uncomfortable… so I guess it’s good this part didn’t last very long.
• Watched a group of professional sky-diving gals jump out at 10,000 ft.  They had been working on a jump routine in the hanger before.  They were fascinating to watch.  Sort of like watching a dance…just that it would be in the air instead of on the ground.
• Reached jump elevation…. I was last out of the plane… not sure why that worked out that way.
• The free fall lasts until 5500 ft in elevation.  So we fell for over 6000 ft at a speed of 120 mph.  It’s so loud you can’t even hear yourself hollering as the wind blows by your ears at 120 mph.
• At 5500 we pulled the chord and everything went immediately and completely silent.  That is an amazing experience in and of itself.  The fall is pure adrenaline, and the glide down once under the chute is pure relaxation and enjoyment.
• There was a real sense that we should probably make this an annual trip…. as Van Halen once said… “Go ahead and jump”.
