Saturday promises to be one of the most amazing days of my life (and the life of Second Chance Church) as we head up to Ottawa to go jump out of a perfectly good plane. As long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to do this. I tried on multiple occasions while I was in the Army to get a slot in “jump school”. Unfortunately, that’s one of the most demanded training opportunities in the Army and slots are hard to come by. So I never made it. And when it comes to doing something like this, you have to have someone to share the experience with or it loses something.
So that explains me….but why would we do this as a church? Because for far too long, people have seen going to church and becoming a Christian as something you do when you either have no life, or you no longer want to have any fun or adventure. Nothing could be more wrong-headed. Jesus Christ calls his followers into a life of adventure… to live fully on the edge. There is nothing MUNDANE about serving Jesus Christ fully. We’ve just allowed it to be so. We want to shake up that perception. Yes, it’s Definitely a bit extreme, but so is the what Jesus asks us to do when he asks us to “die to ourselves”. Why does he ask us to do that? Because we have a strong “self-preservation” impulse wired into us. In other words, we want to always protect our self interests first and foremost. But Jesus knows that will actually prevent us from fully living. We must risk ourselves in order to fully know life.

Ending uga_filter: Saturday promises to be one of the most amazing days of my life (and the life of Second Chance Church) as we head up to Ottawa to go jump out of a perfectly good plane. As long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to do this. I tried on multiple occasions while I was in the Army to get a slot in “jump school”. Unfortunately, that’s one of the most demanded training opportunities in the Army and slots are hard to come by. So I never made it. And when it comes to doing something like this, you have to have someone to share the experience with or it loses something.
So that explains me….but why would we do this as a church? Because for far too long, people have seen going to church and becoming a Christian as something you do when you either have no life, or you no longer want to have any fun or adventure. Nothing could be more wrong-headed. Jesus Christ calls his followers into a life of adventure… to live fully on the edge. There is nothing MUNDANE about serving Jesus Christ fully. We’ve just allowed it to be so. We want to shake up that perception. Yes, it’s Definitely a bit extreme, but so is the what Jesus asks us to do when he asks us to “die to ourselves”. Why does he ask us to do that? Because we have a strong “self-preservation” impulse wired into us. In other words, we want to always protect our self interests first and foremost. But Jesus knows that will actually prevent us from fully living. We must risk ourselves in order to fully know life.

Saturday promises to be one of the most amazing days of my life (and the life of Second Chance Church) as we head up to Ottawa to go jump out of a perfectly good plane. As long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to do this. I tried on multiple occasions while I was in the Army to get a slot in “jump school”. Unfortunately, that’s one of the most demanded training opportunities in the Army and slots are hard to come by. So I never made it. And when it comes to doing something like this, you have to have someone to share the experience with or it loses something.
