The Main Thing
In a world full of choices and distractions, it has become increasingly difficult to identify and focus on “the main thing”.? The options available to us today are overwhelming.? The?activities to choose from too numerous to mention.? But increasingly, those with means and those without realize that there must be “something more” to life than the constant pursuit of the next experience, or the next hit of adrenaline, or the next conquest, or simply surviving.
The Good News?
The good news is that there?IS “something more” and it is available to all.?
It is the gospel of Jesus Christ.? In fact, the very word “gospel” means “good news“.? It is good news because it answers the most basic of human questions and desires.? It answers “why am I here?” and offers redemption and eternal life to anyone who will ask.? That is good news indeed!? No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, no matter what you’ve done, this is for you.?
And better yet, it’s a free gift.? It’s a free gift because Jesus Christ lived a perfect life (without sin), died on the cross, and rose again from the grave, which we celebrate on Easter.?
The Bad News
Why was all of that necessary?? Because we are born with a sinful nature.? Most of us don’t have any problem admitting we are sinners.? We’ve all lied, cheated, misled and deceived. Even the best of us have done those things along the way.? Why?? Because it is our nature.? And because sin is part of our nature, we cannot hang out with God because God is perfect and heaven is perfect.? Which means there isn’t room for any of us the way we are.? Take a look at this passage from 1 John 1:5-10:
5This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
Enter Jesus.? You’ve heard it said that everything has a price.? So does sin.? Check out this verse from Romans 6:23:
23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Jesus Christ came in order to pay the price that none of us could pay.? That price was lived out through a perfect life and paid through a sacrifice on the cross.? And the result is a gift that is offered to anyone who will receive it; a bill has been payed and it is offered to be applied to your account if you will request it.? It is that simple.? Take this passage from Romans 10:9-13 to heart:
9That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” 12For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
If we will simply accept and receive the payment that has already been made for the sin in our life that separates us from God, then God sees us through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.? He doesn’t see us in our sin, he sees us in his son, Jesus Christ, and then adopts us as his own children.? The person?that we could not be with (God), and the place?that we could not occupy because of our sin nature (heaven), now becomes our Heavenly Father and our future place of residence.? These verses from John 1:12,13 confirm it:
12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God- 13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
But What About…….
There are those who would argue that if there was a loving God, he would not allow sin, or pain, or suffering, or that he would accept us all.? The truth is that rather than remove those things, or accept us even though we are unacceptable to a perfect, holy God in our current condition, God has provided a work-around at great price.? He loved us enough to sacrifice his son, Jesus Christ, to pay a price we cannot pay.? He cannot befriend sin, but he can befriend us through?Jesus Christ.? He loves us enough to allow us to freely choose.? It is a trite but true saying that if you love something, set it free.? And if it loves you, it will come back to you.? That is what God has done.? And he offered his greatest treasure to provide a way for us to come back to him….to come home.
John 3:16 -?”For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
If you had to boil it all down to one “main thing”, this is it.? You have one choice in your life that will determine not only your eternal destiny, but the internal quality of your life right now.? Jesus said that he came to give us life.? And not just any life, but abundant life.? Your life may be marked by generous material wealth, or few material possessions.? But the “abundant life” that Jesus offers means that?whether in feast or famine, Jesus said there would be a peace of mind and spirit?and an internal contentment that no money can buy.? Just ask many of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities how satisfying their life is internally, and, if they are being honest, you will learn that money may buy things, but it does not buy contentment or lasting happiness.? You know that.? You’ve experienced it.? The amount of money and possessions doesn’t change the truth of it.? That is what Jesus provides when we leave our sin behind and commit our lives to him.? It is a promise that bears fruit not only now, but forever.
So what are you waiting for.? This may be the best opportunity you ever have, RIGHT NOW, to invite Jesus Christ into your life as your Lord and Savior.? Will you say yes to him?? Will you say yes to the gift he offers?? He will not force you.? He respects you too much for that.? It’s your choice.? Choose life.? Choose Jesus.
If you do, please let me know in the comment section, or email me.? I would love to celebrate your decision with you and assist you in taking the appropriate next step.?
