American Idol - Final Three Power Rankings Surprise

Posted by: Mark Doebler In: Entertainment

It’s hard to believe that there are only two weeks left in one of the more enjoyable competitions on TV. AI always seems to speed by, although this has not exactly been the most exciting season ever. AI has suffered this year from poor songbook selections by the producers. There are a [...]

American Idol Final Four Elimination

Posted by: Mark Doebler In: Entertainment

Tonight the Final Four become the Final Three. I’m committed to the belief that it will be a battle of the David’s to be the last man standing, but strange things happen from time to time on AI. How in the world do people like Sinjaya or others like him outlast real competitors? [...]

American Idol Final Four Analysis

Posted by: Mark Doebler In: Entertainment

From millions of contestants ranging from bizarre and ridiculous to sad and pathetic, from almost but not quite to really, really good, we are down to the Final Four. The NCAA Tournament, fondly referred to as March Madness had four thoroughbreds in the Final Four this year… Kansas, UCLA, Memphis and UNC. All [...]

American Idol Final Four Power Rankings

Posted by: Mark Doebler In: Entertainment

Sadly, this week’s round will be minus my favorite…Brooke.  I can’t say that I thought she should win…I just really liked her.  And I also thought (and still think) that Brooke can have a real future in the music industry.  She offers something so few performers really do…genuineness and sincerity.  I said weeks ago that [...]

Lesley & I are off on a retreat and are minus internet this week. But we did have a chance to watch the elimination and parts of the actual competition night. Here’s my take on what we saw.

American Idol Final Five Power Rankings

Irish Eyes are no longer smiling as the lass from the Green Isle is free to continue her tattoo career. Perhaps she won’t blow her second chance at that career. In some ways I feel a bit sorry for her because she clearly had some incredible vocal skills. But she seemed to [...]

American Idol Final Six Elimination

Posted by: Mark Doebler In: Entertainment

We have the scorecards, and they are not pretty. According to the returns, there is a lot of grumbling amongst the crowd (or at least by me) about the selections of last night. How can anyone associated with AI have thought that would make for a great show. And on top of [...]

AI Shouted Down for Shout to the Lord?

Posted by: Mark Doebler In: Entertainment

I came across a really interesting series of posts about the performance of Shout to the Lord during the Idol Gives Back show a couple of weeks ago.  You may recall that I thought it was pretty cool that they would sing worship song during the show as a group number.  Apparently, there are many [...]

THIS WEEK’S RANKINGS

  1. David Cook - Cook remains the man to beat. he’s got everything a recording company could ask for. It’s not even debatable whether or not he’s the best still in the competition. But whether or not he wins will always be up for grabs until the last phone call is made.
  2. Syesha Mercado - In a surprise move, I have put Mercado ahead of DA. I think she has really found herself over the last few weeks. While neither her nor DA had a lot of personality in the early stages, she finally seems to have found hers. She’s not in the same category as DC, but her spunkiness combined with good vocals over the last several weeks plus the fact she’s the last gal in the competition moves her into the #2 spot in my opinion.
  3. David Archuleta - DA consistently delivers quality vocals… but they lack conviction. You watch this kid and you just know he has virtually no experience with most of what he sings about. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just that the emotional depth of a song can’t be explored if you’ve never been there. He was and is more likable than Carly Smithson who had a similar problem. But Carly’s problem was not so much life experience as just not connecting with the song or the audience. I think DA has shown he connects with the audience, he just needs some seasoning to become believable.

It’s a huge shocker to me to have moved Mercado past DA. The battle of the Davids has seemed inevitable for weeks. But a funny thing happened on the way to the finals… Syesha showed up. It may still wind up being a David vs. David finale, but I think one between DC and SM would prove to be more memorable.

Tonight the Final Four become the Final Three. I’m committed to the belief that it will be a battle of the David’s to be the last man standing, but strange things happen from time to time on AI. How in the world do people like Sinjaya or others like him outlast real competitors? How do people like Chris Daughtry or Tamyra Gray get knocked out before the championship? It’s really bizarre sometimes that way things play out on AI, but I guess that’s why we watch. This year, there is no way that Jason Castro should still be in the ring. He should have hit the mat face first a long time ago and have been dragged out. But he’s still standing while other more deserving contenders are already done.

There is no doubt, no margin for error, no way no how that Castro shouldn’t be the one heading home tonight. Anything else would be a travesty. I will comment as we go, but I can only hope that we’re not sitting slack-jawed later tonight.

5 Minutes to kick-off and I’m getting nervous about the whole Castro thing. Last week was bad enough for me having to say goodbye to Brooke (Who I am absolutely convinced can become a successful artist), but if Castro stays another week, I don’t even know if I can watch the last two shows. I just read some other blog that said they voted for him 30 times last night. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? THE GUY WREAKED! HE WAS HORRIFIC! The author of that blog should have their fingers snapped and their phone smashed. Now I have to sweat out the next hour or so.

NON-ELIMINATION STUFF

RESULTS… WHO’S IN TROUBLE?

AND GETTING THE KNOCKOUT IS…….

JC… There is justice… even if it’s a bit delayed.  While they were standing there, it really sounded like he couldn’t care less.  i wonder if he got to the point where he realized he was in over his head.  It’s funny the guy from Maroon Five said get ready to work.  I’m not sure that’s who JC is… I think he’s more of the beach luau guy that Paula pegged weeks ago.  If so, this was probably what he wanted…. and me too.  The last three all have something to offer.  Good bye JC… you won’t be missed (except by the gals who voted more than 30+ times for you)

  • 50+ million votes cast… I’m even more nervous
  • Group Song - Reelin’ In the Years. This is one of my favorite all-time songs. Steely Dan was an unbelievable group doing songs that sound just as good today as they did 20 years ago. This is not exactly on par with the original, but it’s hard to mess up this song…it just has one of those feel-good vibes. They still need the rockin’ guitar solo… and here we go!!!! (a little lame on the guitar, but it was passable)
  • Watching the replays, I’m surprised that Randy was as tough on the last Syesha song as he was. Castro was worse than terrible.
  • Las Vegas Trip - The overall ratings may be down, but you’d never know it watching this clip. The whole crowd things was cool, but a private 737….. that was off the hook. The clips from the Beatles show were pretty wild.
  • Phone Calls - I really can’t stand this whole segment. This needs to disappear in the next season. Although the “First Kiss” call to Simon the other week was kind of funny. This last question about your biggest challenge was really a perfect example. “I don’t know”… “I can’t think”… “My brain is dead”. Good stuff!
  • Maroon Five - Wow…that lead singer’s voice DOES NOT match his look. I’m pretty sure that he would not win AI if he were in the competition…just not the AI type. He can’t hold a candle to JC.. RIGHT! I do give him lot’s of credit for offering advice that said “Work hard”. No substitute for hard work… even in the music biz.
  • Bo Bice is back. The resurrection of Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Allman Brothers, and Lynrd Skynrd returns to AI tonight. Having grown up in the South I have a soft spot for Southern Rock. Not that BB is as good as any of those other guys, but a screaming Hammond B3 in the background is just flat out good stuff. Not to mention that Southern Rock just has lots of stinkin’ energy.

RESULTS… WHO’S IN TROUBLE?

  • David Archuleta - Because of speed dialers, I’m more confident of his position than anyone else’s. No way he’s leaving. He’s safe… no surprise there. He was a lock. Everyone else can be iffy, although this should be a foregone conclusion.
  • David Cook - I don’t know why I’m nervous about this. I’m just feeling a little Daughtry deja-vu here. But I’m hope I’m sadly mistaken. Waiting….waiting…. OK…he’s good. I’m glad that didn’t go the wrong way.
  • Syesha & JC - I almost feel sorry for Syesha. She just cannot get out of the bottom. Even though she’s been better than just about anybody for the last several weeks, she is always fighting to hang on. In the comparison from last night, it wasn’t even in the same planet close. But when you’ve got people voting 30 times for JC, who knows what to expect here.

All four were number 1 seeds and had been at or near the top of the heap all season long. But that was the first time in history it ever happened. Part of the magic of March Madness is that underdogs appear out of nowhere and take down the mighty Goliath. Most people love to see the upsets in those early rounds. But by the time you get to the Final Four, most want to see legitimate contenders slugging it out for the championship. It would be great to see that in AI too, but it won’t be this year. There are really only two contenders still standing… no David and Goliath…but a David and David. The other two are really place holders, JC and Syesha. They have outlasted other more deserving contenders, but they won’t make it past either of the Davids. Which is kind of sad…because like the NCAA Tournament, it would be great to get to the Final Four with it being a toss up among them all. I always enjoy the journey to get here, but this is not the best Final Four possible. Still, there may a surprise or two, I’m just not betting on it.

Rock ‘n Roll night should give us a lot more to enjoy than most of the rounds this year. The bench of songs is deep and surely there will be be some fun tonight. I know it’s wishful thinking, but I’m an optimist.

I’ll have more to say as the competition heats up tonight… Alright, I’m a little behind on tape delay again, but it’s live for me, so here we go.

  • David Cook - Hungry Like a Wolf from Duran Duran should be a really good song for DC. Gotta say that it just seems a little weird to see him without his guitar…almost like he’s missing a limb or something. Still easily the best left, but not his best. But it was fun and had energy, something that has been missing most of this season.
  • Syesha Mercado - Mercado has been the best performer for the last few weeks except for DC, but she just can’t get off the bottom. She’s survived, but she’s almost done. I think she’s capable of doing a knock-out performance with Proud Mary. WOW! She is really showing some personality. If she had done this all season, she might have a chance at winning, but it’s a little too late. A few minor vocal miscues, but overall all it was really fun!
  • Jason Castro - I Shot the Sheriff is the song of choice for the traveling minstrel. Totally unbelievable. Come on dude…you can’t even shoot a firecracker, much less a sheriff. Part of making a song good is making it believable. Not buying it.
  • David Archuleta - Stand By Me is in the Archuleta wheelhouse so he should do really well with it. When he’s in this genre he shines… his lightbulb just doesn’t seem to come on with anything else. As expected, this is a very good version of the song, and will protect his Final Two status.
  • David Cook #2 - Singing a Who song I don’t really know, but that usually turns out to be pretty good. The gunslinger has his weapon of choice on his hip again and it looks way more natural. I think he performs better with it. He showed a lot of variety and range which is what sets him apart and will make him the winner.
  • Mercado #2 - Sam Cooke’s A Change Has Gotta Come could be a very good choice for her with a lot of soul and power. It will be a completely different vibe from Proud Mary, which could help her reach some crossover voters. She’s showing the vocals she showed way back at the start of this competition, but with more conviction than she had back then. She’s really improved.
  • JC #2 - Bob Dylan and Mr Tambourine Man…don’t think so. Dylan was quirky which should make JC comfortable, but JC is no Dylan. And it doesn’t help when you forget half a verse of lyrics. I can’t believe JC has lasted this long, but if he survives ahead of the other three this week, people need to lose their phones permanently and purchase hearing aids.
  • DA #2 - Love Me Tender should be another good song for DA, although his tones will not sound anything like Elvis. Pretty cool arrangement, makes it almost sound modern. With the way this one is put together, you don’t even hear Elvis in it. Kudos to DA for this one. Actually a very good closer.

FINAL FOUR FINAL ANALYSIS

The Davids did nothing to hurt themselves tonight.  They continue to be the frontrunners with David C still holding the top spot.  Mercado has been steadily improving over the last several weeks and has really shown some chops but I don’t think there’s anyway for her to push past either of the Davids.

JC was atrocious.  His stuff has been just awful for weeks, but he has somehow managed to survive.  With only three other contestants, I don’t know how in the world he can overcome the disaster that he was tonight.  Easily the one that should be headed home…but then again, that’s been the case for weeks now.

Sadly, this week’s round will be minus my favorite…Brooke.  I can’t say that I thought she should win…I just really liked her.  And I also thought (and still think) that Brooke can have a real future in the music industry.  She offers something so few performers really do…genuineness and sincerity.  I said weeks ago that I think she could potentially be a bit like Alicia Keyes in building a career… a slow build from a pianist singing really good music to a more fully formed entertainer.  I’m hoping it will happen and think it can if someone will get behind her.

Now onto this week’s contenders.  The Final Four give their take on the Rock ‘n Roll Hall Fame music.  I’m not exactly sure what that means other than we should have a second consecutive week of fun music.  As much as I enjoy AI, this year’s musical selections have been underwhelming, bordering on boring.  If there’s one thing that AI has proven over several years, it is that the contenders will default to ballads more than not.  Unless they are given wide berth with lots of high energy music to pick from, they will more times than not choose the same-o same-o…. which after a while becomes lame-o lame-o.  But the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame should spare us from more of that.  So where do our contenders stand going into this round?  Let’s take a look.

  1. David Cook - No change in any of this week’s rankings actually.  They are all still in the same spots.  Cook is the odds-on favorite to win.  I just don’t see anyone beating him at this point…but then again, we were all stunned when Duaghtry hit the mat a couple of years ago.
  2. David Archuleta - I like this kid, but he has become boring.  He’s got some growing up to do… life experience should improve his music.
  3. Jason Casro - If he has survived the last two weeks after absolutely horrible performances, he’s sticking until the final three.
  4. Syesha Mercado - Mercado is singing better than everyone but Cook right now…but the other two guys have shown more staying power.  It’s the end of the road for Syesha.

I could wind up being surprised if Mercado outlasts JC, but I don’t see either of them with a spot in the final two.  It’s a dog fight between Cook and Archuleta to see if speed dialers will beat out talent dialers.
